Published Apr 21, 2014Halifax's Jessie Brown previously released a self-titled EP under her own name, but now she's co-billed with her backing band the Black Divine. Their new EP is called Act II: Decisions, and ahead of its release on April 29, it's available to stream in full on Exclaim.ca.
The songs were written by Brown along with guitarist Adrian Dunn, with recording taking place at Playground Sound Studios in Nashville. Production was handled by Rob Crowell and Adam Landry, and the results were mixed by Adam Landry.
Brown's voice ranges from a deep purr to a gritty wail, while her bandmates' accompaniment splits the difference between hard-hitting rock and vintage soul. Opener "Deep Down Below" opens the six-song set with waltzing R&B and whirling organs. Elsewhere, "Spite" is anchored by punishing riffs, while "Best Disguise" and "Ten Paces" have toe-tapping grooves, and climactic closer "Before the Darkness" begins as an atmospheric ballad and eventually crescendos noisily.
Jessie Brown & the Black Divine will release Act II: Decisions with a show at Halifax's Seahorse Tavern on April 25.
