Jenny Berkel Announces Debut Album, Canadian Tour

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Apr 17, 2012

Winnipeg-based folkie Jenny Berkel has been refining her sound for the last few years and is now ready to release her songbook to the public via her upcoming debut, Here on a Wire, which arrives digitally on May 1.

The 11-song set was crafted following a move from Ontario to Manitoba, something that saw her halting studies to hop on a Prairies-bound Greyhound with a guitar in tow. The following two years had her accumulate the haunted, folk-inspired melodies that allegedly fill Here on a Wire, whose album art you can see above.

Produced by Matt Peters (Royal Canoe and the Waking Eyes), the album is supposedly "alternately sad and hopeful," and features arrangements of cello, upright bass, French horn, slide guitar, organ and more paired with Berkel's smoky voice. You can sample album track "Love Is a Stone" down below.

Berkel will be taking her tunes out on the road just after the album's release, travelling from Ontario out to the Maritimes. You can see the details at the bottom of the page.
