Jennifer Budd

'Lip Service' (album stream)

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Nov 12, 2015

Hamilton, ON's Jennifer Budd is ready to release her debut album Lip Service tomorrow (November 13), but Exclaim! is giving you an early listen to the whole thing right now.

The soulful singer-songwriter drew on her own personal experiences to craft the 10-song collection. "For the first time this album, I believe, is a true reflection of the artist within me," she said in a statement. "It's a compilation of my thought processes and feelings from the last couple of years. Diving into my own revelations about this chaotic world, heartache, and my own struggle have made this album what it is."

As for the title, it reflects a theme of hypocrisy that runs through each song on the record. From the bombastic opener "Church" to the dark, don't-mess-with-me attitude on "Don't Even" to softer piano-driven ballad "Love Means," Budd delivers an eccentric and engaging array of styles and sounds before finally bringing the album to a close with the dark, slow-burning and emotional "In the Morning."
