Jeff Mueller Fold and Perish

It’s a rare CD these days that clocks in under 30 minutes; rarer still is an effort like Jeff Mueller’s, that actually takes you on an interesting, worthwhile musical journey in sitcom time. This is Mueller’s first solo record, having played with the influential Rodan, and currently toiling in June of 44 and Shipping News. Knowledge of the latter will let you in on the slow-paced proceedings here, but there’s more to Fold and Perish than just being a post-rock Low. There are a couple of instances of words spoken over instrumental explorations, including a “cover” of sorts of June of 44’s “Giant Sky” — same words, spoken not sung over completely different music. Lean in so you can catch each little nuance — it’s better for you than TV. (Monitor)
