Jeff Buckley's Early Recordings Unearthed for 'You and I'

BY Alex HudsonPublished Nov 12, 2015

Jeff Buckley tragically drowned in 1997 having released just one studio album, but he's since been remembered with a string of posthumous releases. The latest of these is You and I, a collection of early studio recordings. It will be released on March 11 through Columbia Records/Legacy Recordings.

These were the first studio recordings that Buckley made for Columbia, and they were recently discovered in the Sony archives during the research for a reissue of Buckley's 1994 album Grace. The performances are entirely solo and consist largely of covers (including tunes by the Smiths, Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin and more), plus a couple of originals. These recordings have never been released, bootlegged or heard in any way by the public.

The bulk of these were recorded in February 1993 at Steve Addabbo's Shelter Island Sound studio in New York. This collection was overseen by Buckley's mother, Mary Guibert.

Legacy Recordings boss Adam Block has this to say in a statement:

As we began to explore how we might celebrate the 20th anniversary of Jeff Buckley's Grace, the vault — as it still occasionally and unexpectedly will — presented us with an unbelievable gift: this 'lost' cache of studio recordings from the period. We quickly realized how remarkable they were. They offer an incredible, rare glimpse of an artist, alone, in the sacred space that is the studio. There's an intimacy and an honesty to the performances that's literally breathtaking. You & I is an important addition to Jeff's recorded legacy and will be a thrill for both his devoted longtime fans and newcomers alike.

The track "Everyday People" will be released on a 7-inch for Record Store Day's Black Friday event (November 27), with the original version by Sly & the Family Stone on the flip-side. Hear Buckley's rendition of the tune at the bottom of the page.
