Published Jan 16, 2010After a bit of holiday hangover, the new year got into full swing this week, making for more than a few stories in our News Round-Up.
First off, this week the world lost Memphis-based garage icon Jay Reatard. While the cause of the 29-year-old's death has yet to be confirmed, rumours have begun to surface, leading to much speculation surrounding the tragedy. Several of Reatard's peers paid tribute to the fallen rocker, as they, like his many fans, try to come to grips with the sudden loss. Strangely enough, just days before his death, Reatard was up to his old shenanigans, with the musician talking shit about some of his rock'n'roll peers in what may be the final news story printed before his death.
Unfortunately, Reatard wasn't the only artist to die this week. Beloved soul singer Teddy Pendergrass passed away, as did Wax Trax! co-founder Dannie Flesher, roots reggae vet Yabby You and singer-songwriter Bobby Charles.
Of course, it wasn't all doom and gloom during the last five days. Swans reunited, Pavement announced their first Canadian reunion show, the Yellow Submarine remake got its cast and Owen Pallett revealed he almost changed his name from Final Fantasy to, um, Skylord.
And then there was rapper Lloyd Banks getting himself into a bunch of trouble in Ontario, with some Kitchener local also now being arrest in the scandal, while Jessica Simpson revealed she's working on tracks with Billy Corgan. Seriously, we don't even know who we should be embarrassed for anymore.
