Published May 27, 2013This spring, rap mogul Jay-Z announced plans to add a sports agency wing to his Roc Nation empire, but he's already landed himself in a spot of trouble, as the NFL is investigating him for possibly breaking league rules.
As TMZ points out, Roc Nation recently signed New York Jets draft pick Geno Smith. Before the announcement was made public, a photo on Instagram showed Jay-Z and Smith hanging out (see above). The problem is that only NFLPA-certified agents are allowed to recruit clients, and Hova isn't yet qualified.
Making matters worse, CBS Sports quoted Smith's advisor, John Thornton, as saying, "I was in those meetings and Jay-Z connected with [Smith] on many levels."
He has since said that he was misquoted. Whatever really happened, Jay-Z's burgeoning career sports agent seems to be getting off to a slightly rocky start.
In addition to Smith, Roc Nation Sports represents New York Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano, New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz and basketball player Skylar Diggins.
