Jane Waynes

Jane Waynes

Toronto's Jane Waynes are Lisa Silverman, Catherine Doherty, Murray Foster and Jason LaPrade, who play a version of alt-country they've dubbed "cowboy." This five-song demo EP recorded off the floor at Clinton's in their hometown gives you a good idea of what they're about. The quirky songwriting with female leads singing in a male "voice" ("Dirty") pairs up well with the skilful playing, while "Horse to Water" evokes a little Velvet Underground, and it's certainly promising enough to entice you to head out to your local dive to catch their live gig. More importantly, it shows that the Jane Waynes can and should scrape some cash together and do some studio work to sell from the stage. This is a good start, and I'm looking forward to a follow-up.
