Published Jul 10, 2013As the hype dies down for Jay-Z's Samsung Galaxy-based new album Magna Carta Holy Grail, which is released proper today (July 9), the artist has started drumming up excitement for a unique vinyl release via Jack White's Third Man Records.
When asked why his track "Open Letter" didn't make it on the final version of Magna Carta Holy Grail, Hova tweeted that the song would be available on "vinyl only, handled by Jack White."
Then, in an interview with Hot 97 that you can view below, Jay went into more detail about the upcoming collaboration, saying, "It's in a letter... you can play the letter... it's amazing... You open the letter, and you can actually play the card." While details are scarce, this sounds like it'll be a flexidisc of some sort.
No word yet on when Third Man will issue the "Open Letter" vinyl or if they plan to release the rest of the album on vinyl, but one thing remains clear: with a mutual love of gimmicky presentation, Jay-Z and Jack White were made for each other.
UPDATE: Along with the "Open Letter" single, Third Man will release the vinyl edition of Jay-Z's entire album. The label has issued the following statement:
Third Man Records is pleased to confirm their involvement in the vinyl release of Jay-Z's long-anticipated new album, Magna Carta Holy Grail.
While the album was released in standard formats this week, Third Man has something very special planned for the vinyl edition which will be made available for purchase in the coming weeks.
Additionally, we can confirm the song "Open Letter" will be featured as a vinyl exclusive, but stay tuned here for more info coming soon.
