Jack White Almost Starred in 'A Star Is Born'

Bradley Cooper has also defended the movie's ass song

Bradley Cooper's A Star Is Born proves, among other things, that you can be in a room of 100 people, and 99 of them won't believe in you, but all it takes is one. But it wasn't always Cooper who planned to lower his voice and fall in love with Lady Gaga on camera. In fact, another musician nearly took the central role in the film.

In a new Variety cover story, Cooper revealed that he had his eyes on a special someone to star across Gaga in the film. "I saw this other person that I wanted to do this, who is an actual musician," Cooper said. "But [the studio] wouldn't make the movie with him."

A source suggested to Variety that it was the White Stripes' own Jack White who had been seriously considered for the role. This was also before Lady Gaga signed on, so we have to imagine who White would have starred with. Juliette Lewis? Courtney Love? St. Vincent?

We'll never know — and we'll never know how White would have handled that iconic pants-pissing scene.

Elsewhere in the cover story, Cooper defended the film's "Why Did You Do That?" — a song that includes the line, "Why'd you come around me with an ass like that?"

Of the song, Lady Gaga said, "When we see her on Saturday Night Live, and she's singing a song about why do you look so good in those jeans, it's almost the antithesis of where we started."

But Cooper argued, "I don't necessarily view her music as superficial. I think she's performing with all her heart."

It's really an important reminder that you can be in a room of 100 people, and 99 of them won't believe in you, but all it takes is one.
