J Dilla's Mom Launches Label

As you hopefully remembered, this Sunday (May 13) was Mother's Day, and the late J Dilla's mom, Maureen "Ma Dukes" Yancey, marked the occasion by announcing the launch of her own label, Ruff Draft Records.

The label, which shares the name of Dilla's 2003 EP Ruff Draft, will focus on releasing the hip-hop star's extensive posthumous catalogue, and may also include releases from new artists as well.

"We want to make it more feasible to interact with these children, we don't know how many J Dilla's we have out there," Yancey said in an interview with AllHipHop. "Somebody has to find them."

The label's first release will be Rebirth of Detroit, the previously announced posthumous collaborative album that is due June 12. Listen to the Danny Brown-featuring cut "Jay-Dee's Revenge" below.

Prior to the album release, the label will launch with a party on May 25 at Detroit's Magic Stick.

Reports have suggested that Yancey recently came into possession of hundreds of tapes made by the prolific Dilla prior to his death in 2006. So evidently Ma Dukes will have plenty of material to draw from for her label.
