Iskwé

"Soldier" (lyric video)

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Aug 17, 2017

Last summer, Winnipeg singer-songwriter Iskwé unveiled a lyric video for "Sometimes," and now she's ready to share another follow-along clip for "Soldier."

Always striving to honour her Irish and Cree/Dené roots (her stage name comes from her native word for "woman"), Iskwé's latest single is also a forward-thinking homage to future generations.

"It's impossible to know what shape our planet will be in several generations down the road," she explains. "What I do know is that we need to do better. 'Soldier' is for all the protectors of our land, our water and our future generations."

The song has been paired with a scenic lyric video that compiles footage of the natural world, including forests, fields, water and sky. There are also clips of humanity's interaction with the land, including traditionally dressed First Nations people, a fisherman and Queen Elizabeth's face on a crisp $20 bill.

Watch the juxtaposition of images in the clip below.
