Iron Maiden

Live After Death

BY Keith CarmanPublished Feb 22, 2008

"Scream for me, Long Beach!” Any self-respecting metal head knows these words as their own personal Pledge Of Allegiance, immortalised by lead singer Bruce Dickinson during Iron Maiden’s Powerslave tour circa 1985. As an album, Live After Death is one of the greatest concert records in heavy metal history and thankfully, its DVD companion is on equal footing. Shot on the second of two nights at Long Beach Arena, this Live After Death provides the visual follow-up to the album, which was recorded on the first evening. Running through an endless stream of favourites, including "The Trooper,” "Number Of The Beast,” "Iron Maiden” and more, the band are flawless. Their energy is constant, enthusiasm is high and the entire production is stunning. Theatrical elements such as a mummified Eddie bounding about and Dickinson’s delightful eagle mask are truly larger than life. Bolstered by a second disc featuring three documentaries ("History Of Iron Maiden Part Two,” "Behind The Iron Curtain,” "‘Ello Texas”), footage from the band’s 1985 Rock In Rio stop, promotional clips and art/photo galleries, Live After Death is nothing less than phenomenal.
