Published Sep 09, 2015Soldiers of Fortune bill themselves as an "anti-band," but despite an aversion to touring or frequent releases, they have now lined up a full-length album for Mexican Summer. Early Risers is due out on November 6, and it features a number of notable contributors.
Soldiers of Fortune were assembled way back in 2004 by Brad Truax, a touring bassist with Interpol and Spiritualized. The core lineup on Early Risers includes Kid Millions (Man Forever, Oneida), Barry London (Oneida), Matt Sweeney (Chavez, Zwan, Skunk), Jesper Eklow (Endless Boogie), Mike Bones and Papa Crazee (Oakley Hall, formerly of Oneida). Contributing vocalists include Stephen Malkmus, Cass McCombs, Ethan Miller (Howlin' Rain, Comets on Fire), Dan Melchior and more.
This album follows Soldiers of Fortune's 2011 four-song 12-inch Ball Strength. The recording process for Early Risers began with a three-week session that was aborted before, according to a press release, the group "fell back in the studio and recorded a dozen embryonic 'song ideas,' rather than jams, over an afternoon. We then called up friends who know how to sing and finished up the damn thing in like three days."
The 10-song tracklist is below (the singer for each track is listed in parentheses). Scroll past that to hear the Kid Millions-sung punk jam "Nails."
