International Zombies of Love

'You Heard This Wish' (album stream)

Today (May 27) is release day for Toronto's International Zombies of Love, who just dropped their album You Heard This Wish through We Are Busy Bodies. Before you purchase the album, the whole thing is available to stream here on Exclaim.ca.

The album's sound centres around a piece of gear that band leader Mike Farrell calls his "instrument of destruction." which is old portable Yamaha keyboard with a selection of vintage patches. (We're guessing that's the keyboard on the album cover above.)

A press release notes that this album is more focused on "rhythm section and electronic keys" than the band's past work. This can be heard in the buzzy tones of and bouncy rhythms of opener "Nobody Knows." Elsewhere, the wistfully cathartic "Oh What a Life" features cinematic synth strings and "That's Just What You Do" ends the album with a sprawling arrangement and sci-fi textures. There is also a handful of stripped-down ballads peppered throughout the album.
