In The Face Of War

We Make Our Own Luck

BY Keith CarmanPublished Mar 23, 2007

Seemingly strange yet incredibly enticing, We Make Our Own Luck finds In The Face Of War uniting two very different styles: the epic instrumental dynamics of metal with updated street-level hardcore, much like Jade Tree ragers New Mexican Disaster Squad. It makes for songs that are fast and muscular while still managing to showcase impressive musicianship. Their third effort to date, We Make Our Own Luck, is by far the band’s most accomplished and comfortable. There’s an unmistakable air of professionalism and pointed intent clearly culled from many years of Black Flag worship. Obviously being Midwestern U.S. boys has done them well. Those years of pent-up frustration and aggression in youthful boredom explode on this record with genuine fury and accomplishment. They probably won’t notice the accolades though, as they’re too busy finding the next thing to violently obliterate.
