Ike and Tina Turner: Live '71

BY David DacksPublished Jul 4, 2007

This is a fascinating look at the Ike and Tina Turner Revue in peak form. The grooves are tremendous and Ike plays a hell of a guitar—Pete Townshend would have had a hard time matching his stage volume. Tina's wearing an absolutely scandalous outfit and is ever bit the "jungle girl” (Ike's words) icon that made her famous. There are no missed notes and everyone is rock solid but there's a deeply weird quality to this DVD. For one thing, this show was recorded in Holland and the audience is disturbingly polite and blond, even in the raunchiest moments. Also, let's face it, it's Ike and Tina—Ike always looks like he could have beaten the crap out of anyone/everyone backstage. No one smiles, but it's damn funky. Plus: audio CD, music video.
