Published Sep 24, 2014After portraying Nelson Mandela in last year's Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, actor Idris Elba has curated a new tributary album to the South African political icon featuring contributions from the likes of Mumford & Sons and James Blake.
The mi Mandela collection arrives in North America on November 25 and a day earlier in the UK via Parlophone and Elba's own 7wallace imprint, with a press release calling the 11-song set "a celebration of South African music inspired by Nelson Mandela."
Featuring a mix of Western artists and South African musicians, the album includes songs Elba wrote using a keyboard and a laptop at his apartment during the making of Mandela, though Mumford & Sons submitted "Home." Blake appears on the record's "Nothembi Jam," while other artists popping up throughout mi Mandela include Johannesburg electro/hip hop figure Spoek Mathambo, Cody Chesnutt, Nothembi Mkhwebane, DJ Spoko, Mr. Hudson and the Mahotella Queens. The record was crafted in London, Mali and Johannesburg.
Elba noted in a trailer for the LP that South African music was "part of [his] research" for the role of Mandela, explaining that he wanted to understand the roots of the music.
"South Africa has over 60 different tribes and each one has a musical expression. Each one has very unique, different sounds and style. I tried to understand some of this," Elba said.
