Human Bell

Human Bell

Human Bell are a new duo featuring a past and current member of ambient folk band Arbouretum, revelling in the freedom of open compositions. Former Lungfish bassist Nathan Bell and David Heumann share a history; Bell played in Television Hill, the band that spawned Arbouretum, which Heumann has now commandeered. Anchored by the subtle call and response of their dense, intricate electric guitars, this record is a confident debut, mixing moods and musical styles with seamless ease. Just as "A Change of Fortunes” settles into a loping groove, with guitars bouncing off of Ryan Rapsys’ drums on his sole appearance here, "Splendor and Concealment” is an evocative folk country lament. There’s a cinematic flair to the shimmering tones of pieces like "Outposts of Oblivion,” while drummer Peter Townshend urges "The Singing Trees” towards a realm between Sonic Youth and Crazy Horse. Forceful and moody, Human Bell balance the foundational stability and manic movement of guitar with vital results.
