The Huckleberry Friends

The Huckleberry Friends EP

It’s been a few months since it first saw the light of day but this is one debut from an unsigned band that shouldn’t go unnoticed. This all-girl Toronto trio have delved into the darkest corners of their collective unconscious and come away with a startlingly impressive auditory depiction. It’s a bit like a post-punk séance, with meditative incantations circulating above a minimal pulsating groove of guitars and Moog interacting in lo-fi harmony. Essential track "Who Wovo” is particularly mesmerising — it creeps under your skin surreptitiously, as though by hypnosis, before plunging into sinister slow-mo freefall and burning itself into your memory with a prolonged, lulling coda. It’s not exactly ideal summer listening but it’s genuinely riveting, exciting stuff that hints at grand possibilities.
