Vancouver's Peach Pit have had a quick rise to become one of Canada's most buzzed about young pop-rock bands. With over two million monthly Spotify listeners, the newly released You and Your Friends is sure to continue their upwards trajectory thanks to undeniable songs like the self-deprecating anthem "Black Licorice" and the intimate breakup lament "Shampoo Bottles." We caught up with the band about balancing feelings of despair with the luxuries like gardening, bidets and finally owning a computer.
Are you working on any music while on lockdown?
Neil Smith: I am! I actually just got a computer for the first time in years and years. Before recently, I had just been using my iPhone for everything and then right before the quarantine hit I was given this 10 year old MacBook from my Dad. I think it was just kicking around in a closet at the school he teaches at. Anyway, so I've been recording my own demos for the first time in a long time. It's been fun. I'm trying to write a hit quarantine love song right now, but it's harder than it sounds because all I've been doing otherwise is watching old golf reruns on YouTube. Not very romantic stuff honestly.
How do you feel about the response to coronavirus?
Neil Smith: Well, I've been spending way too much time on Reddit scrolling through coronavirus threads so I've become a bit of a doomsayer. I know there's so much misinformation out there about the virus, but I tend to latch onto the worst-case-scenario stuff that I see online. So I'm kinda freaked out, I really hope people will take the virus seriously and stay home, ya know? I'd just really love to see the world not collapse. That would be tight.
What's your self-isolation setup?
Christopher Vanderkooy: At home, with my lovely girlfriend Lindsay, renting out the middle floor of an old creaky house. I now have enough Kraft Dinner to last till June and have run out of toilet paper, but am cleaning my butt with a bidet! It's pretty friggin' luxurious if you ask me!
What are you watching and listening to?
Mikey Pascuzzi: I like to finish off my days in quarantine with a beer and a couple episodes of Trailer Park Boys. I've watched this show countless times, but it always makes me laugh. Listening material the last few days has consisted of Mild High Club, Kurt Vile and Thundercat. Big shout out to all the frontline workers out there. Peace and love
Have you picked up any new hobbies or routines in isolation?
Peter Wilton: My newly-wed wife and I have decided to start a vegetable garden in our backyard. I had never been very keen on gardening until now and I would definitely call it a new hobby. If people are looking for something to get excited about that actually takes up a lot of your time and is very rewarding, start gardening! It's cured my cabin fever and it makes your routine fulfilling.
