Halloween may have come and gone, but Holy Fuck mastermind Brian Borcherdt has given us a spooky gift that keeps on giving. Remember those squeaky-voiced Alvin & the Chipmunks records? He wisely chose to slow 'em down, thereby turning the vocals into a normal pitch. He uploaded his project to the SoundCloud page "chipmunkson16speed," and the rest is Internet history.
The result is a seven-song EP that's at once nightmarish and strangely familiar. You'll get to hear sludged-out, slowed-down renditions of hits like "Heaven Is a Place on Earth," "Walk Like an Egyptian," "My Sharona" and many others.
Speaking with NOW, Borcherdt explained that he's always wanted to do this project but never found the time. Still, he's happy with the final results.
"I know it's funny, but it's also heavy, and it sounds beautiful," Borcherdt said. "It makes you rethink the process involved, but there's also just something poetic about it. Music is such an exploration of time, and it's interesting the way you can manipulate that and change the intention. The vocals would have been recorded slow like that. That's how the singer did them in a vocal booth in a studio, never to be heard in that original form."
Listen to Alvin & the Chipmunks like you've never heard them before below.
