Hockey

Pulling the Goalie

Despite its litany of associated double-entendres, hockey has rarely sounded as spicy as it does in the hands of the Five-Hole Band. On their debut record Tales of Hockey Erotica, the all-star crew present an often hilarious, pointed soundtrack to a theatrical show they're taking across Canada. Consisting of former Rheostatics Dave Bidini and Martin Tielli, and close cronies Selina Martin, Ford Pier, and Barry Mirochnik, the Five-Holes have teamed up with Calgary's One Yellow Rabbit Theatre for this intimate production that pokes fun at hockey, while also acknowledging its rich and rarely discussed socio-economic subtext. The sexual and gender dynamics of this nation's inherently violent pastime are explored incisively through infectious, occasionally overwrought theatrical tunes. Available now on zunior.com, Tales of Hockey Erotica is slyly ambitious, subtly dissecting a sport via some memorable, excellent songs.
