This weekend offers some romantic and not so romantic movie releases, from sappy sob-fest The Vow to Lynne Ramsay's unsettling portrayal of a parent's worst nightmare, We Need to Talk About Kevin. For full reviews of the following highlights and more, head over to our Recently Reviewed section.

First up, Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds star in Daniel Espinosa's entertaining CIA action-thriller Safe House (pictured), while Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum play a couple struggling to deal with the repercussions of a car accident in cookie cutter romantic drama The Vow.

The Rock battles giant lizards in Brad Peyton's family-friendly 3D action sequel Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. And French art house director Robert Guédiguian depicts the human side of crime with The Snows of Kilimanjaro, a tale of pain, trauma and, ultimately, forgiveness.

Finally, Tilda Swinton plays a confounded mother trying to cope with her sociopathic son in We Need to Talk About Kevin, Lynne Ramsay's unflinching and inconclusive exploration of nature versus nurture. Excellent performances, skilled direction and a hypnotic soundtrack courtesy of Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood make this gripping psychological thriller our one to watch this week, even if it might put you off ever procreating.
