Hellaluya / Cartoons

Hellaluya / Cartoons

It's a sad case that the Buzz Garage, Toronto's wildest DIY venue/clubhouse and recording location for this release, has temporarily vanished, but sublime documents like these will at least make sure the legend lives on, scrawled in the dirt. Hellaluya's first half features a mixtape-ish patchwork of grind-pop bricolage, spawned of collaborations between Alex Low and a rotating mash-up of comrades. It's a cheeky stew of grunge, gangsta rap, noise and straight-up metal riffing, writhing and thrashing around like disjointed demons in your brain coils. The Cartoons half offers up frenetic garage punk for some great emergency. The distorted, raw throat snarl of Denholm Whale, also the bassist for modern murderers Odonis Odonis (Daps), could provoke you to just keep cracking your head against a wall and love it.
