Helen

"Violet"

While Liz Harris is known for her spectral quietness when performing as Grouper, she's tapping into noisier sounds with her forthcoming debut album with the band Helen. With The Original Faces due out on September 4 through Kranky, the group have now shared "Violet."

No, the song is not a Hole cover. Rather, it's a shoegaze scorcher with cascading 6/8 drums and a think blanket of aggressive fuzz. The harshness of the distortion is contrasted by the soft vocals, which are so thickly soaked in reverb that they glide angelically atop the rest of the arrangement, sounding unconnected with the sonic chaos of the guitars.
