Published May 11, 2017Last month, we learned Japanese electronic music icon Cornelius would be coming back into our lives with the new album Mellow Waves — his first since 2006. Now, following some frustratingly brief sound snippets of the record, we've finally got our first proper taste of the new LP with "あなたがいるなら" (or in English, "If You're Here"), which comes via an impressively slick new video.
Directed By Koichiro Tsujikawa, the clip is very Cornelius, with an array of digitally manipulated found objects coming to life before our very eyes. Cups of coffee, necklaces, water bubbles and various other objects float ghostly by in a room, as the video sticks almost entirely to a monochromatic colour palette.
Sonically, the song hears Keigo Oyamada sounding familiar but totally new at the same time. With Oyamada's soft coo leading the track, it blends various age-old Cornelius-isms with untreated BGM-styled guitar work, some future-R&B drum rhythms and a certain almost sexiness rarely heard in his work. It's an impressive return, to say the least.

As previously reported, Mellow Waves arrives in Japan on June 28 via Warner. Its international release is slated for July 21 via Rostrum Records, and you can see the album's tracklist below.
While 2006's Sensuous marks the last proper Cornelius album, he's been far from inactive in recent years. Cornelius released his NHK デザインあ (aka Design A) soundtrack in 2013, two Ghost in the Shell soundtracks (one in 2013 and another in 2015), the rarities effort Constellations of Music, an expanded vinyl reissue his beloved 1997 album Fantasma, and a Record Store Day 2017 release with Penguin Cafe.
