Published Sep 21, 2015Vancouver blues-rock unit Head of the Herd are ready to follow up 2013's By This Time Tomorrow with a brand new LP titled Birds on the Roof, and Exclaim! is giving you the chance to hear the whole thing before it hits shelves this week.
Blending a range of influences that include Southern soul and classic rock'n'roll, the band have crafted their own signature modern, blues-infused sound. Marking the band's most ambitious outing to date, Birds on the Roof was recorded between four locations (the southern U.S., England, Wales and Vancouver) and hears the group working with multiple producers, each one specifically selected to match the song.
Mark Neill (the Black Keys), Ian Davenport (Band of Skulls, Supergrass), Gggarth Richardson and Ben Kaplan split production duties, and the band's Neu Mannas even helmed a session himself.
"Whatever is best for the song is the path we take," said the band's Mannas in a press release. "Too many bands mess up their records by doing what's easy, cheap and expected of them. We knew these songs were special, and would go to any length to get that across."
The result is a collection of groove-laden tunes that delivers everything from bouncy "ba da ba ba" hooks ("Live for Love"), softer melodic numbers ("Gone Too Far," "The World Is at a Loss Without You") and heavy rockers ("Giving Tree," "All the Way"). Hear them all come together by giving the full album an early listen in the player below.
