Published Oct 05, 2012Thanksgiving long weekend means that fall has definitely arrived and there are plenty of great films hitting theatres. If you're unsure what to hit up, Exclaim!'s Recently Reviewed section has you covered. Be sure to take a look at this week's highlights below, which include a thriller, an animated feature and a biopic.
The sequel to the 2008 action thriller Taken, simply titled Taken 2 (pictured), is out this week with returning lead actor Liam Neeson. This spy thriller follows up the events of Taken, with CIA agent Bryan Mills (Neeson) battling it out with his previous nemesis Murad (Rade Serbedzija) who is back for vengeance.
Also, Tim Burton's anticipated new animated feature film Frankenweenie comes out this week. The movie combines the familiar story of a young boy and his dog with the classic plot of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, and features the star-studded voices of Winona Ryder, Catherine O'Hara, Martin Short and Martin Landau.
Director Darrell Roodt continues his own personal tradition of politically charged films with his latest, Winnie. The film follows the life of activist Winnie Mandela, played by Jennifer Hudson, starting from her childhood all the way up to her marriage and life with Nelson Mandela (Terrence Howard).
Lastly, Ron Fricke delivers yet another visually stunning documentary in the form of Samsara. Without the use of any narration, the film uses beautiful visuals juxtaposed with images of dehumanization to display the darker effects of civilization in some of the most remote areas of the world.
