Fred's Records is an awesome independent record shop, the kind of place where displays have hand-written reviews. They also proudly support local artists. Wondering who's playing downtown? Just want to chat about music? Go to Fred's. It is the heart of the St. John's music scene.
Bannerman Park
The site for the St. John's Folk Fest, Bannerman Park is widely regarded as one of the top 10 naturally occurring bocce courses in the Western hemisphere. (Note: not a real fact.) It's also next to one of the best slabs of 'za in the city (Venice Pizzeria) and it's a hop-skip-and-a-jump from the tastiest ice cream delights in the kingdom (Moo Moo's Ice Cream). Quidi Vidi Gut
One of the great things about St. John's is you're never far from nature. Lately, I head for "The Gut" (Quidi Vidi village) to escape the noise of the city. I pass through the old fishing village and make my way down to the ocean. Once there, I just lay on the rocks and stare at the sky. Time stands still.
Fixed (183 Duckworth St.)
One of the the newest coffee shops in town. It's conveniently located, and while it has great coffee and baked goods, it also has an inviting atmosphere and you're almost sure to see a familiar face. (www.fixedcoffee.com)
The Ship (265 Duckworth St.)
Even in the cold, dead expanse of our howling winter, walk into the Ship and you are suddenly warm, wrapped in sound and friends. It's just the right size (half-small), just the right price (half-cheap) and often has just the right half-mad line-up to get your face flushed and your blood moving. Dreamy, like a merry-drunk humid-hot cloud we climb into weekly and sail away. Find the right show and get aboard.
Hey Rosetta! are prepping to record their new album. Although it takes two days of driving and an overnight ferry to get to most of their shows, they have no plans of moving away anytime soon.
