Hands & Teeth

'Before the Light' (EP stream)

BY Matthew RitchiePublished Mar 3, 2014

Theoretical physicist Albert Einstein once said, "Nothing happens until it moves." But that rule doesn't only apply to the laws of the universe.

Since their 2012 debut album, Hunting Season, Toronto pop-rock outfit Hands & Teeth have been causing heavenly bodies to move across the dancefloor thanks to their expansive grooves and spacious riffs. But following the departure of a founding member in 2013, the band decided to shift their songwriting towards an even more pop-focused sensibility. The result is Before the Light, and you can listen to the EP in its entirety ahead of its universal unveiling on March 11 through Underground Operations.

Recorded at Ill Eagle Studio with Zeus members Carlin Nicholson and Mike O'Brien, Before the Light finds the band returning with a bigger bang than ever before. Tremolo-heavy album opener "Alice" sways with a wondrous groove, while "In the Eyes" and "Not the Same" suck listeners into a wormhole of funky yacht rock and blistering power pop.
