Pay equity is an issue that has been discussed throughout various industries in recent years, and it appears that the problem exists in the music industry as well. After all, HAIM have opened up about a shockingly uneven pay scale at a recent music festival.
Though they didn't disclose which festival or artist they were discussing, the trio told Grazia magazine [via NME] that they were paid 10 percent of a male counterpart at a fest.
"We had been told that our fee was very low because you played at the festival in the hope you'd get played on the radio," Danielle Haim said. "We didn't think twice about it, but we later found out that someone was getting paid 10 times more than us. And because of that we fired our agent."
Alana Haim added, "That's why I love my sisters so much. I trust them with my fucking life. We're all in this together.... But it's scary out there and it's fucked up. It's fucked up not even to be paid half the same amount. But to be paid a tenth of that amount of money? It was insane."
While we'll probably never know the full story, there's no question that HAIM were underpaid for their appearance. After all, how many artists are big enough to be immortalized with their own SNL parody?
