Gwar Gear Up for New Album

Gwar Gear Up for New Album
It's been two years since Gwar released their Bloody Pit of Horror LP, their last with the late Cory Smoot (aka Flattus Maximus) on guitar. But the cartoonish, costumed metal unit have announced that they're prepping a follow-up for sometime in 2013, which currently has the working title Mad at the Sun.

Vocalist Oderus Urungus (aka Dave Brockie) recently revealed the tentative album title in an interview with Metal Kaoz [via Blabbermouth], and noted that the set's concept centres on "a sick and twisted future vision of the world, and all the atrocities awaiting human beings, unless you get your shit together." The group will begin recording the album shortly after they get home from their current "Fate or Chaos tour."

While song details have yet to appear, Brockie previously told Legendary Rock Interviews that they had written 13 "heavy" new songs. He also noted that the band brought their A-game to overcome the loss of Smoot, who died in the group's tour bus due to a pre-existing heart condition.

"Do I think Gwar fans are gonna love it? Yeah, because I think it's the best album we've ever written," Brockie said. "That's what we set out to do and that's the only thing you can do after going through a tragedy like losing a guitar player, a friend, a guy who was that important to your music. It's do-or-die time with this band and that will be what happens with the next Gwar album."

The recording will mark the debut of new guitarist Brent Purgason, of Cannabis Corpse, who will perform under the moniker Pustulus Maximus (a relative of Flattus's).

"At this point I have nothing to say to the press, even though I am talking to you. I will let my guitar speak for itself," Purgason told Guitar World last month. "But let me add that I am blood-sworn to honour the legacy of the great Flattus and indeed the whole Maximus tribe. I didn't come here to fuck around. Hail Flattus!"
