There's no doubt that the prolific Robert Pollard's kept busy since the demise of Guided By Voices. He just released We All Got Out of the Army, is set to contribute to country legend Glen Campbell's farewell disc, and now, this: he will be scoring an upcoming documentary about baseball legend Pete Rose.
Pollard will be writing the main theme to 4,192, and the filmmakers - director Terry Lukemire and producer Aymie Majerksi - are also using instrumental versions of several Pollard songs for the flick, which is set to premiere July 9 in L.A.
"I met with them a few weeks ago and saw a rough cut and they said they wanted a lot of anthemic stuff," Pollard told Spin. "It's Pete Rose, he's got heart. Muscle and heart. They're using instrumental versions of songs that already exist, but I'm also gonna write one new song for them for the main theme - five minutes long and building up to a big crescendo. I'm picking all these kick-ass songs for it. They want me to slow it down in certain spots, but it's Charlie Hustle, man."
Rose gained notoriety in the baseball world for his gambling exploits, but he also is the all-time Major League leader in hits, games played, at bats and outs. Due to the aforementioned gambling, Rose is not eligible for induction in the Baseball Hall of Fame.
"I think Rose got a raw deal," Pollard said to Spin about his ineligibility. "What the fuck?... If I were Pete Rose, I'd be like, 'Fuck your hall of fame.'"
Easy for Pollard to say: he's actually in a sports hall of fame himself. Back in a different lifetime (1978), he pitched Wright State University's first-ever no-hitter, and, as a result, is in the Northridge High School Hall of Fame. Go figure.
In more musical Pollard news, his Boston Spaceships are set to release Our Cubehouse Still Rocks on September 7, and he will release another solo disc Moses on a Sail on June 22.
