Grizzly Bear

"Cheerleader"

BY Cam LindsayPublished Mar 19, 2009

I'm sure if you're a Grizzly Bear fan curiosity has already gotten the best of you and you've downloaded the new album. But, as you can likely tell, the quality is like listening to a fourth-generation cassette that has sat a good day or two in direct sunlight on the dash. Who knows when or if the retail version of Veckatimest will leak before the May 26 release date but thankfully, Warp Records has been generous enough to donate a track in glorious, well, better 192 kbps form.

I wouldn't say it's the album's standout but "Cheerleader" is the perfect tease for newcomers, or those few still holding out for a pristine version of the album. In this quality, you can actually hear the cathedral walls radiating with the choir's angelic harmonies, the drums, guitars and organ all reverberating off John the Baptist's stained glass window, and Ed Droste's Splenda-sweet vocals carefully guiding us into a heavenly swoon.
