Grimes' "AI Girl Group" NPC Share New Song

As expected, the Chris Lake-produced track "A Drug from God" marks the new project's first single

Earlier this month, Grimes took to Instagram to announce plans for her new music project NPC — a supposed "AI girl group" — who have just released their debut single "A Drug from God" with help from house DJ Chris Lake.

The group reportedly consists of infinite members who can be voted in and out of the collective, while core members — including baby Warnymph — will remain. As Grimes relayed in a recent post, the team behind NPC are running late on developing the visuals for these characters, so we'll just have to wait to meet them.

UPDATE (11/12, 4:30 p.m. ET): "Beta" versions of Grimes' NPC band members are now live for your viewing pleasure on the artist's Instagram.

According to press materials, the new project is "a vehicle for experimentation in new technologies" including "generative characters and music, diff types of animation, AI-assisted art as well as spiritual technology in that Grimes can create as other people in order to reduce the psychic pain of being in the public eye."

The project promises to "hone the concepts of Art Angels and Miss Anthropocene, finally manifesting the endless characters in Grimes' head." The group will apparently one day be "playable, customizable, and able to cater to each individual listener's unique desires. Decentralized Popstardom. Made, not Born."

The previously teased single can now be heard in full below. So far, there's been no word on a full-length release from NPC.
