Gregor Tresher

A Thousand Nights

BY Stephanie KalePublished Feb 20, 2008

The past few years have seen German producer Gregor Tresher rise on the European techno scene. One of his tracks made it on a Cocoon compilation, and the "A Thousand Night” single was a hit on European dance floors last summer with melodic, Aphex Twin-like, ambient synth-y swirls. A lot of the instrumental voices and drum samples he uses are in a minimal techno vein, but the songs have a busier, fuller structure, like trance. He spends time with the build-ups and releases, letting each new loop dwell long enough to create new space, but doesn’t tire it out. "Painkiller” conjures a blissful state, with its soft waves of rolling synths. "Full Range Madness” has fuzzy borders with electro and a thick, fat, rolling bass line. Most of the songs are interesting enough to sustain the seven- to nine-minute lengths they reach. Remixes of A Thousand Nights by Dubfire and Extrawelt are scheduled to come out soon.
