Green History

BY Jason SchneiderPublished Oct 25, 2009

Greenpeace has become so ingrained in our culture that's it's easy to forget where it all began. Amchitka: The 1970 Concert That Launched Greenpeace preserves that moment for all time. Recorded at Vancouver's Pacific Coliseum and featuring Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, and Phil Ochs, the show was part of a larger protest to stop nuclear tests near Amchitka, Alaska, an event that coalesced into the Greenpeace movement. That significance aside, the double disc captures the three artists in peak form, especially Mitchell, whose mesmerizing set previews many selections from Blue. The album is available exclusively through www.greenpeace.org starting Nov. 10, with all proceeds going to the organization.
