Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong Opening His Own Guitar Shop

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Mar 12, 2015

Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong is getting into the music instrument business, with plans to open up a guitar shop in Oakland next month. The grand opening of his Broken Guitars is set for April 3.

A post on the band's website explains that Armstrong and former Pinhead Gunpowder bandmate Bill Schneider have partnered up to open the six-string retail shop, which will open with roughly 75 guitars on its wall. Most of those have been culled from the personal collections of Armstrong and Schneider. The shop will also sell amplifiers, presumably some of those being custom pieces built by Schneider's Dexter Amps.

Since 2013, the retail space had been run as a menswear shop, but a recent move led to Schneider and Armstrong securing the spot for Broken Guitars. "It's only been a month since we got the opportunity," Schneider said in a statement. "It's now at the moment where I'm getting really excited. It feels real."

There's a bit of punk history to the store as well, having been the original location for the Bay's 1-2-3-4 Go! Records. The business, which has hosted secret performances from Green Day and Foxboro Hot Tubs over the years, moved into a building across the street in 2012.
