Grabowiecki/Coryell/Bird

Live at the Oasis Lounge

BY David LewisPublished Oct 1, 1999

Fluent and relaxed, this impressive Guelph piano trio creates memorable music in front of an audience that, judging from the faint applause, might have actually been tinier than the band! Nevertheless, Witold Grabowiecki plays with facile, inventive charm and is capably matched by sometime Cowboy Junkie Jeff Bird on bass and Randall Coryell on drums. There’s plenty of cool intricate interplay in standards like “Things Ain’t What They Used To Be,” “Flamenco Sketches” (actually “All Blues”) and “Angel Eyes.” As Grabowiecki returns to his native Poland in November, this memorable document might be your only chance to a hear a little known combo that’s as accomplished and capable as any in the biz.
