Gorillaz

Bananaz

Filmed between 2000 and 2006, Bananaz documents the vital moments of Jamie Hewlett and Damon Albarn's much beloved, oft-misunderstood cartoon super-group Gorillaz. Filmmaker Ceri Levy follows the band from day one, as Hewlett introduces early sketches of 2D, Murdoc, Noodle and Russel, concluding with a string of performances at Harlem's Apollo Theatre. Although no earth-shattering scoops are offered, the film does a fine job showing just how uncertain Albarn and Hewlett remain about the concept of Gorillaz. Highlights include Dennis Hopper, De La Soul, Shaun Ryder and Danger Mouse's studio cameos, along with a look into the scope of the voices and musicians involved within the band. One of the most revealing moments show just how humbled and ego-less Albarn becomes once he has to deal with musicians (Ibrahim Ferrer) and regular folk (a woman from the Apollo staff) who have no idea that he's kind of a big deal in England.
