Gorguts

'Pleiades' Dust' (EP stream)

BY Gregory AdamsPublished May 4, 2016

Canadian death metal greats Gorguts are about to drop a history-minded, one-track epic titled Pleiades' Dust. Before the 33-minute explosion arrives at retailers next week, the band are streaming it in all of its glorious, tech-style insanity right now.

As previously reported, founder Luc Lemay prepped this most recent piece with guitarist Kevin Hufnagel (Dysrhythmia), bassist Colin Marston (Dysrhythmia, Krallice, Behold…The Arctopus) and drummer Patrice Hamelin. Thematically, the release deals with Baghdad's ancient "House of Wisdom," intellectualism, and "how man destroys great discoveries and achievements."

We'd previously been privy to a snippet from the song, but you can now traverse all of its punishing peaks and valleys. It begins with discordant, fractured melodies and walloping double-kick rhythms, but later whirls into complex time signatures, structure-damaging blast beat passages and also more morose, moody breather sections. Lemay runs his howl ragged throughout.
