Four years removed from their last full-length L'Enfant Sauvage, French metal outfit Gojira have shed new light on their follow-up record, which is due for release later this year.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, brothers Joe and Mario Duplantier revealed that the currently untitled 10-track effort will arrive in the summer. Initially planned as a 12-song release, the band opted to trim things in the interest of people's attention spans.
"We want a short album," Joe told the magazine. "Something less epic than what we usually do. People's attentions are shorter now. So a lot of the songs are four minutes."
The brothers also revealed that the record was heavily influenced by the death of their mother, along with both becoming fathers following L'Enfant Sauvage. "We had a bitter taste about the album when everything was going on," Joe said. "We'd say, 'Fuck, what about the album? Fuck.' It took us months."
Mario added, "But at the same time, it became the soul of the album. We respect the fact that this album took a long time, because it's full of emotion."
With songs for the new release half-finished when their mother passed, the band completed a tour cycle and returned to the studio to wrap the emotional sessions.
"When you read Joe's lyrics, for me, I cry right away," Mario said. "They're very deep and to the point. No bullshit. We recycle our sadness and depression in the music."
