Godspeed You! Black Emperor Add Two Montreal Performances for 'monumental' Dance Piece

BY Josiah HughesPublished Dec 9, 2015

Way, way back in 2005, Godspeed You! Black Emperor joined forces with Vancouver dance troupe the Holy Body Tattoo to perform the multi-disciplinary piece monumental. As previously reported, the two have teamed up to bring the piece back to life in 2016. Today, they've added more shows.

We already knew that they'd perform on January 28 at Vancouver's Queen Elizabeth Theatre and on April 15 at Quebec City's Grand Théâtre de Québec, but the group have now added a pair of shows in Montreal. On April 11 and 12, they'll perform at Montreal's Place des Arts.

The piece was commissioned by the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival, who early on explained that this would be a "multi-city, international tour." They also described monumental as follows:

monumental, with nine dancers mounted on pedestals and the eight-piece band, is the expression of the madness of urban life—the repetition, the confinement, the alienation. Movement turns into metaphor, dance into poetry and sound into substance. The result is as violent, beautiful and cathartic as art can get. For fans of the band, lovers of contemporary dance, or anyone open to the most radical possibilities of human creativity, this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that can't be missed.

Stay tuned for more from Godspeed's monumental project, and check out the band's full 2016 tour schedule below.
