Published Dec 03, 2008As we first mentioned back in May, Art Brut front-man Eddie Argos has been moonlighting with a select bunch of musicians in London in a proper glam rock band they've christened Glam Chops. Of course, that's while he currently works on a new Art Brut album with Frank Black.
Well, Glam Chops have finally released some music and it's the best kind: free and Christmas-themed. Alright, free is always the best, but as I've learned these last three days of doing Click Hear, there's plenty good in Christmas music - you've just got to go find it.
We already told you it was coming, and the 'Chops don't disappoint. "Countdown To Christmas" is a revved up, stompin' glam rocker not far from Art Brut's spirited rock'n'roll. It sounds like it was recorded on a few too many egg nogs, but that's what the holidays are all about: being drunk and singing carols, right? Also, note how much Mikey Georgeson aka David Devant sounds like the original glam king, David Bowie.
This likeness carries over to "Baby Jesus Was The First Glam Rocker," a much milder carol led by Georgeson and a choir of kiddies. More acoustic than its sibling, and with plenty of sleigh bells, the titular statement makes for a brilliant chorus, which I'm hoping will catch on like "Rudolph" or "Frosty" did. The lyrical wit extends to the verses, where he imagines shepherds playing flying V's, Joseph in platforms, the Virgin Mary sporting a golden leotard, and the wisemen smothered in glitter. You get the picture.
And if you're curious about what "Baby Jesus Was The First Glam Rocker" would sound like if Argos was singing, well, you can hear it when you get your free copy of Black Christmas, a new holiday comp featuring classics and not-yet-classics done by the Flaming Lips, Billy Childish and Twisted Sister over at Bizarre Magazine.
