Art Pop

BY Rob NayPublished Aug 14, 2007

With its alluring, multiple layers, Art Pop sets a highly compelling scene. The group have an exceptionally impressive line-up, featuring Wire’s Colin Newman, Scanner’s Robin Rimbaud and former Minimal Compact members Malka Spigel and Max Franken. On their second disc, the group assemble an intricate architecture. The record references some of the electronic aspects of Newman and Spigel’s previous musical collaborations but also features more marked pop sensibilities. "These Days” and "Live in your Head” offer soothing melancholy, while "All Set Up” and "Drive By” convey more incisive edges. Certain songs also deliver mesmerising turns that recall the spiralling moments from Wire’s 154. With its rich depth, Art Pop offers an album that wraps listeners in its many lush textures.
