Germaphobes

'Fiji Whizz' (album stream)

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Oct 3, 2016

Toronto indie rock unit Germaphobes released an EP entitled Magic Eye last fall, and they're ready to follow it up with a full-length offering by the name of Fiji Whizz, which you can stream right now at Exclaim!

The album serves up nine tracks of the group's quirky blend of musical eccentricity. From the retro vibes of instrumental opener "Theme from Germaphobes," the album moves through moments of psyched-out, pop-tinged, experimental indie rock that tell stories of everything from filing your taxes and falling in love to having the misfortune of finding your mom on social media.

Germaphobes laid down the new material at Toronto's Union Sound Company before finishing off the album at producer Alex Gamble's home studio.

"We didn't plan it this way, but I think this album is our attempt at making a slick pop record," the band's Paul Erlichman and Neil Rankin tell Exclaim! "It's very clean and shimmery, but hopefully weird enough to keep the freaks coming back for more. Fiji Whizz is the perfect cocktail for the end of summer with ingredients that can be taken on their own or all mixed up together in one swirling blend of weirdo pop bliss."

Fiji Whizz gets its official release on October 7 through Pleasence Records, but you can give it an early spin right now. Just scroll past the band's upcoming Canadian shows and hit play below.
