VWETO II

Overload, her 2018 Flying Lotus-produced offering, was the most accessible album of Georgia Anne Muldrow's joyously wayward sonic journey of psychedelic, jazzy funk, thus far. Yet those fearing that Muldrow had abandoned her more avant-garde tendencies will no doubt find comfort in the all-instrumental VWETO II.

The 16-track sequel to 2011's VWETO is a foray into simmering, sun-drenched, bass-driven g-funk, seasoned with Muldrow's way-out arrangement sensibilities. "CV Jam Number 2" and the aptly-titled "Nate Dogg's Eulogy" are astral, low-riding jams, perfect for summer cruising, yet also cerebral enough for a late night solo headphone session with a haze of chronic smoke.

The celestial "Big Mama Africa Jam" is a delicious slice of cosmic jazz, the effervescent glide of "Brokenfolks" and the deeply bouncy "Old School Fonk" nod to the past, present and future, while the creamy groove of "Wu Punk" radiates with a sublime, romantic aura. Overall, VWETO II is a balmy summer soundtrack for the cosmic funk faithful.
