Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu Gurrumul
The music of Australian aboriginals has rarely been exposed internationally (Yothu Yindi and the abuse of the didgeridoo by white artists aside). With any justice, that will change with this simply stunning work from blind aboriginal singer-songwriter Yunupingu. It has already gone platinum in Australia and has earned such fans as Björk and Sting. The singer's effortless tenor voice serves up sweet and soulful sadness on songs sung primarily in his Yolngu dialect. It's perfectly matched by his simple yet fluent fingerpicking guitar and the sparse clarity of the production work of Michael Hohnen (who also contributes double bass). There is no concession to the contemporary in Yunupingu's lyrics, as his songs pay tribute to his ancestors and the land in which he is so clearly and deeply rooted. Gurrumul is a gently powerful, haunting gem. (Justin Time)
