Geoff Berner

"Gino Odjick" (video)

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Aug 14, 2017

Geoff Berner released We Are Going to Bremen to Be Musicians back in 2015, but he's back with a new record that's due out next month. Before Canadiana Grotesquica arrives in its entirety, Exclaim! is giving you a taste of the new material with the video premiere of "Gino Odjick."

The track is a tribute to former Vancouver Canuck Gino Odjick, an Algonquin and noted tough guy on the ice. Berner says it's about "someone who survived a violent system while keeping his dignity and becoming a leader in his community."

It's indicative of Berner's latest sonic direction, too, showing off a country-leaning sound that marks a bit of a departure from his usual blend of klezmer-punk.

The accompanying visuals for "Gino Odjick," meanwhile, feature on-ice footage of the titular man himself. There's definitely a lot more fist-fights than there are goals, but it's all good fun to watch.

Canadiana Grotesquica is due out September 9 via Coax Records. Scroll past Berner's upcoming tour dates to watch the video for "Gino Odjick" below.
